Von Trapp Brewing

Von Trapp Brewing is a Stowe brewery known for Austrian-style lagers, run by the family whose story inspired The Sound of Music. Maria and Captain von Trapp settled on a Stowe farm in the 1940s and began welcoming guests to their home in 1950, the start of today’s von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort. Their youngest son, Johannes, graduated from Dartmouth and traveled before coming back to run the family business. Surrounded by Vermont IPAs, he missed the light, refreshing beers of the European countryside, ones you could drink at lunch without needing a nap. In 2010 he started the brewery in the basement of the resort’s Kaffeehaus bakery. It has since moved into a 30,000-square-foot brewery that can produce up to 36,000 barrels a year. The lineup includes five core beers, seasonals and experimental series. The 2024 Great American Beer Festival named it Brewery of the Year.
